Online poker is not one game, but a large family of
related games. Hence the online poker rules may vary from site to
site. There are so many variations of these poker rules that it
sometimes seems a new "family member" appears every time someone picks
up a deck of cards. Still there are general poker rules and principles
that unite almost all games that fall under the name of poker.
Online poker is a rich, complex game that combines
skill, luck and intense psychological warfare. Every player competes
against and interacts with every other; each player's actions
influence each other player's actions.
In some casino games, you play against the house
and its pre-determined, unchanging rules. The opponent you need to
outsmart sits at the table with you. The game is incredibly adaptable,
and the growing popularity of online poker attests to that.
The object of online poker is deceptively simple:
win the money in the pot during a round of play by either having the
best poker hand (highest ranking five-card hand) when the wagering is
done or by forcing all other players out of the hand. The pot contains
all money contributed during a hand, including antes, which are used
to seed the pot before each hand begins.
The very basic rules:
Act in turn. Don't act before the next player.
Don't throw your chips into the pot.
Avoid making a "string bet" or "string raise".
Place the proper amount in the pot at one time.
Make decisions in a timely manner. Especially
when playing online poker.
Keep your cards on the table.
Turn ALL your cards face up at the showdown.
Don't discuss your hand during play.
Tipping the dealer is considered appropriate.
NEVER raise your voice to fellow players, the
dealer, or the floorperson.
Games are played "table stakes". If you run out
of chips halfway through a hand, you must be All-In. You cannot
reach into your pocket for more money.
Always check the rules of the casino you are in.
While in most cases, casinos stick to the same set of rules, this is
not always the case.
There are more types of casino poker variants:
Regular poker games are not always offered in
every casino. When they are offered, they are typically found in
their own area, usually called the Poker Room.
Table Games are the games played at tables in
the main part of the casino
Because the rules for these games can be found on
other pages, they will not be included here. There are, however, some
differences worth noting here:
The Rake - the house does not play, but takes a
percentage of the pot. This is usually 10% if there are 5 or more
players and 5% is there are less. It is very rare to see a table
stay open in a casino with only 4 players, and they almost always
close with less than 4.
Unlike home games, if you are playing for fun or
for any other reason then to win money, then you are in the
minority. Most everyone in that room is there to make money. The
people that are not, are merely wallets for those who are.
Unlike home games, other players are impatient,
especially at the Hold'Em tables. Be prepared for hostility if you
slow down play.
